Opportunity: Doris Christopher, a graduate of the University of Illinois, wanted to bring her Pampered Chef Family Resiliency Program’s uniquely interactive approach to research and learning to the University. Multiple programmatic goals include traditional classrooms, a production studio, conference space, and faculty offices, as well as a Family Observation Suite – a simulated home environment where family interaction can be studied by faculty and student researchers.
Solution: Organized into two structures, the 23,700 square foot building expresses a balance between the rigorous nature of academic research and the welcoming environment required for public engagement. The 1,000 square foot Observation Suite offers a comforting “residential” character of a family home, while a 22,700 square feet main building houses the academic functions. Interiors are planned around an atrium which encourages communication.
Value: Located on the edge of campus, the design of the facility achieves a unity of scale, materials, and details which mediates between academic and residential buildings.
