Opportunity: The Chicago Park District wanted a prototype design that would set the standards for future fieldhouses and accommodate a broad program that could be adapted to a variety of sites.
Solution: Programmed to include administrative and support functions, a gymnasium, fitness rooms, athletic fields, and more, the design will also allow for future additions of a natatorium and a clubroom. Curved metal roofs provide an iconic form appropriate to the civic mission of the institution, while also offering flexibility as the design is adapted to each site.
Value: The new fieldhouse design, which has been constructed at Jesse Owens and Taylor Laurisden Parks, is being embraced as a catalyst for revitalization in the adjacent neighborhoods. In addition, these buildings embody the green initiatives identified by the City of Chicago, the Public Building Commission, and the Chicago Park District, with a goal of silver level LEED certification.
